Travelling from Cape Town to the Garden Route provides opportunity to explore the many interesting farm stalls along the way. One such place is the Blue Crane Farm Shop, three kilometres before Heidelberg on the Cape Town side. Set in beautiful farm surroundings, it is a peaceful stop to stretch your legs after a few hours on the road and grab a bite to eat before continuing your journey. The interior of the shop and restaurant has a typical farmhouse feel with modern décor, making it homely, yet appealing with a choice to sit either indoors on colder days, or outside on a sunny afternoon.
Offering café style meals with take away options, Blue Crane also sells homemade breads with gluten free and rye options, fresh fruit and vegetables, dried fruit and nuts, biltong, preserves and fresh tarts, quiches and cakes. Reasonably priced, a toasted cheese sandwich on rye bread cost R15 for a three-slice sandwich. Considering that one usually pays extra to change to rye options in restaurants, this was a good deal.
