Richard’s Supper Stage

Posted on

Sitting around a dinner table with family and friends, feasting on a hearty hot meal while listening to the reminiscent stories of grandpa’s colourful life sounds like just the thing for a chilly winter’s night. Richard Loring has brought exactly this to the heart of Cape Town, setting the scene in an appealing dining room where guests are served traditional Cape cuisine with favourites such as vegetable breyani, Cape Malay chicken and prawn curry, melktert and koeksisters. Richard even provides the grandpa in the form of Papa Joe Kleintjies telling the Kaapse Stories of District 6 at Richard’s Supper Stage and Bistro.

In an interwiew with award-winning director, Basil Appollis, he tells us that this show is a “celebration of Cape Town, its spirit, its people, it’s vibe. It is a tribute to the people of District 6.” And a celebration it is! With a vibrant cast portraying a generic Kaapse family and a musical set that had the audience singing and, towards the end, joining in on stage, this production is not one to be missed.

July saw the three year anniversary of Richard’s Supper Stage & Bistro and more than 70,000 local and international guests enjoying fantastic dinner theatre. Chatting to the cast it is evident they are passionate about their work, and we are told they were much involved in shaping their characters around their own personalities, allowing them to perform their roles with flair.

The performance is entertaining for all ages and the cast were engaging with audience members young and old.
